How to Clean and Maintain Tile Floors


There are many different types of tile floors that are very aesthetically appealing to homeowners. One of the most prominent features is that they are relatively easy to keep clean. The actual method that will be used to clean the flooring will depend largely upon the exact type of floor you have.But there are a couple of things that you can do to help extend the life and glow of your tile floor no matter what kind you chose.

You will not need to purchase any harsh chemicals to keep the flooring clean. You really will not need much more than just plain water. Mix one cup of white vinegar in one gallon of water and use it to mop the floors. To make sure they are properly maintained it is a good idea to vacuum the floor every single day. This will help keep the floor free from dust and debris that can potentially damage the floor. You can sweep them using a regular broom as well. When you are cleaning a travertine tile floor, you have to remember that this is a stone surface. It is actually a mineral. You will first want to use a dust mop to clean the floor of debris. You can also accomplish this with a small vacuum of some sort. You will want to purchase a special cleaner from a stone soap dealer. Using a wet mop method, apply the cleaner to the floor. Then use a dry mop to soak up all the liquid. Make sure that you are not using too much cleaner as it can leave unsightly streaks. One of the major differences of this type of flooring material is that you will not want to mop it too often. You may protect its natural shine with non-slip or area rugs. Unlike other floor surfaces you will not want to use vinegar or bathroom cleaners on it as they can contain damaging acids.

Sometimes it may take a little more effort and some extra cleaning. But as a general rule it is very easy to clean, especially if you maintain the surface regularly. To keep it clean, simply sweep or vacuum it every day. Then, about once a week, or more often if it is needed, wet mop the surface. There are two types of cleaners that work best for this type of flooring. For an all natural cleaner just use vinegar. But if you want a different type of cleaner make sure to use a soapless cleaner like 409 or Spic and Span. These will not leave a soapy film on the floor. Put small amounts of the desired solution in some water and wash small areas of the floor. After you wash it with the cleaning solution, rinse it quickly with plain water. This will help keep the floor shiny and clean without spots or buildup.

If you have a tile floor, you will have grout, that is a given! Keeping it clean as you go will help maintain the surface. However, there will be times when you will notice some unsightly buildup and you will want to give it a thorough cleaning. For the most basic and natural clean simply use vinegar or baking soda. A paste can be made using baking soda and a small amount of water. Dab the paste onto the grout and then scrub it with a stiff brush (an old unused tooth brush works fine). Rinse it well and mop with clean water and dry it with towels or a dry mop. Equal amounts of vinegar and water can clean the grout as well. Other household cleaners can work well also.
